| | |   CROSS TALKS 4 | Liza Babenko |  (VISUAL) REVOLUTION OF THE MAIDAN: between Russian colonialism and Ukrainian nationalism | 19. NOVEMBER  2014

The lecture and screening of Liza Babenko?s documentary learning films will be dedicated to the ideological, polity-economical and visual analysis of the Ukrainian Maidan revolution from the internal perspective. We will touch upon post-colonial and national reasons of the initial non-acceptance of this revolution by the South and Eastern parts of the country. Position of the Ukrainian ?Other?, which historically belonged to the Crimea and Donbass, will be problematised as an post-colonial evidence of broken into several national identities country. Besides, based on the researches of Ukrainian journal of social criticism Commons, Liza Babenko will discuss the necessity of actualization in nowadays post-Madian Ukraine such philosophical categories as nationalism, patriotism, fascism, national identity politics, post-colonial ressantiment and politics of memory concerning the Second World War. With the help of all this discursive instruments, but not only, we will try to understand the roots of the current war in Eastern Ukraine, except of the obvious Russian invasion and media propaganda. Also, we will look through such results of Maidan revolution, as activation of  Ukrainian right-wing forces and regular change of the local oligarchic elites. All that will made us to raise the final question : whether the whole Ukraine, together with all its variety of national identity types, was needed in social revolution, but not in national one? And what is the political future of East European region in general?

||  ?Maidan: The Lost Revolution?  video, HD, 28'39, Kiev, 2014 This short video is a documentary chronicl? of one of the many days lived by the author on heroic Maidan in 2014.Frozen panoramic plans alternate with the scenes from the everyday and already recognizable political as well as aesthetic reality of this one Ukrainian protest. But today, re-looking at all of these massively replicable visual images and ideological rhetorics of Maidan, we can try to imagine what was this revolution for residents of the East and South Ukraine, who did not accept neither the form nor the content of Maidan from the very beginning. In the midst of the war on Donbass we can also try to put for ourselves on the following questions: why this form of Maidan was so unacceptable for the other part of the country? Moreover, which type of revolution would unite Ukraine, but not split it up?

||  ?Banderovite?,  video, 12?18, Kiev, 2013 This short documentary video was filmed in a working-class neighborhood of the Lukyanovska area in a time of winter Maidan in Kiev. At that time everything in the country was focused on the preparing for preterm elections to the parliament. The main character is representative of the Western Ukraine nationalist organization UNA-UNSO, which is close to the right-radical views Ukrainian party "Freedom and ?Right sector?. Such people are called by the Russian chauvinists and Russian-speaking residents of the Eastern regions of Ukraine ?banderovites?.  However, our hero is not a typical Ukrainian nationalist, but rather marginal, trickster of this revolution, agitating against all the corrupted parties and oligarchic candidates. At his campaign tent taking pace a dialogue with the passers-by. During the dialogue it become clear, that Maidan protesters are also quite different in their ideological positions, and that if fact they do not have uniting all of them political program, except of the will to expel the president V.Yanukovych. At the same time, for some Maidaners V. Yanukovych is "lesser evil" of Ukrainian politics, than ?all the rest?. In conclusion, ?banderovite??, who is critical towards Yanukovich as well as to his opposition, is blamed in the breaking the opposition and collaborating with the president. But in fact, is it right?

The film is the visual exploration of a suburban area of Milan, a tinderbox of imaginaries, a combination of resilient practices, a memories? stratification: Giambellino as an open air political laboratory. Post-vanguard, or better, an inland where to keep on rethinking about the present.

Giambellino, Milan.
Giambellino, an indefinite place. An outskirt among many others, not particularly worth seeing either for the presence of its social housing blocks or for the determination of its migrants. Not even for its isolation from the rest of the city.  Site that is pervaded by the strongest, deepest oppositions. A hinterland: ?not only a site of pride but of dissatisfaction too. A place of hope, of trust, of departure, of ever imminent fever. Not of wisdom. Perhaps, who knows, of something still better?.  Political hinterland, or better infrapolitical hinterland. That is an off stage land. It shows a great variety of low profile resistences that are not openly shown off. Since a low profile ?suits better the task of fighting against an adversary who could otherwise win in any open fight?. This film doesn?t describe Giambellino, it rather tells a process in search of the world that is forged in Giambellino. The world we want to take part.   The film is directed by ?immaginariesplorazioni?.

immaginariesplorazioni is a cross-curricula research collective born in June 2011 in Giambellino, a fringe area of Milan, Italy. It inquires about complexity of urban, marginal imaginaries: it has come out a new way of thinking the practice of inhabiting modern conditions of living. After a phase of study with professionals (such as E. Sivan, R. Malighetti, F. Jodice, HomeMovies), the collective took the field and, a year after, here it is as filmmaker of entroterra Giambellino (Lab80 film) and as the author of the book Nella tana del drago (Agenzia x). www.immaginariesplorazioni.it

||| CROSS TALKS 1 |  Burkak Kokuman | Acik Radyo ISTANBUL  | 2011

An Interview presentation with Burçak Konukman, radio journalist at Açik Radio, Istanbul

Within the vivid and rapidly growing art scene of Istanbul and beside well known established institutions many independent art initiatives and projects with focus on critical, political, theoretical and discursive approaches are active.

Burçak Konukman and Eraslan Saglam, two radio producers established the contemporary art conversation program /  Zamansiz  / which means Timeless at Açik Radyo. The program?s general concept is to broaden the awareness of the contemporary art movements, developments and discussions in Istanbul but also on an international level. The program which is /broadcasted/ every week on Thursdays is part  of the framework called Open Magazine. Therefore /  Zamansiz  /  offers listeners different formats. Interviews with artists,     curators and art relevant people, previews of upcoming events, reviews and discussion on past exhibitions and happenings as well as an additional video archive, consisting of a filmed documentary of each of the interviews builds the Zamansiz visual art conversation program. www.acikradyo.com.tr

During this presentation Burçak Konukman will introduce us to the developments within the contemporary art scene in Turkey. By introducing the weekly radio show Timeless and contextualizing the most interesting examples of his interviews, and highlighting the formats of the program, the journalist will explain how established institutions work. As an artist Burçak will be our guide through hidden art spaces and independent art projects. During the conversation we will discuss the role and give a feedback to /  Zamansiz  /   in Istanbul today, questioning the double profession of a journalist/artist in one person for objective/subjective judgments. Public is welcome to take part in the conversation.

Burçak Konukman, artist, performer and journalist,  lives in Istanbul since 3 years. From October 2008 to the end of 2010 he worked as an assistant at 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency in the Visual Arts Department. In 2009 he started his MA in Cultural Management.
